The kuo-toans of the Âkhi empire constructed Unvarith as their northernmost outpost. After the abandonment of Gholompotl, the kuo-toans of that city-state migrated to Unvarith and wrested control of the settlement from their Âkhi adversaries (circa Year 925). Fierce conflicts to reclaim the site resulted in Unvarith evolving into a formidable citadel.
Unvarith spans both the surface and the Underdark. The city's surface begins near the base of Izen'nâth, overlooking the murky waters of Lake Trândargal, and extends southward like a wedge into the underground. Descending to the lake's water level reveals a humid, wet Underdark city teeming with grottoes, fungi gardens, mushroom forests, and lichen. This subterranean realm is the domain of the city's kuo-toa and slaves. The surface portion has its own governor, who answers to the subsurface authority. The upper half of Unvarith is home to those more accustomed to surface conditions, with a population primarily comprising goblins and Mongrelfolk. The surface city was initially built by Gholompotl's kuo-toans as a venue for meeting foreign emissaries and conducting trade with the aboveground realm. Subsequently, some of the original builders remained, gradually transforming their makeshift camps into permanent structures.
