The Whaling Union, a collective of prosperous whaling families from Blackjammer, initially formed Icyke. The wealth amassed from trading whale oil, furs, and iron to foreign nations had made these merchant families exceedingly affluent. Later, a Dromite merchant named Icyke discovered vast deposits of rich black oil. He utilized the wealth plundered from the Ukgam oil fields to buy out other companies and eliminate the leaders of his rivals. In 1814, after a five-year civil war, the Whaling Union and other influential merchant clans coalesced to form the Icyke Syndicate.
Some of Icyke's merchant houses maintain their own private military forces. The soldiers of these armies are represented by the guilds that constitute the Mercantile Enforcers, who collectively fight for the empire when required.
The largest trading partners of Icyke are Tamlêrran, the Orchish Empire, and the Khazarkar Empire.
In the Year 1828, the Icyke forged an alliance with the Neeth-Theen on the Cinazan Front.
