Athenian Schism

Location Lands of Purity
Period 19 War March 1488

Two years after the conclusion of the Black Tide War (1465 - 1486), a profound schism arose within the Church of Athena in the Lands of Purity. One faction of Athena's devotees, led by the Gudyazas, embraced a crusading philosophy, while their counterparts upheld traditionalist principles. The Gudyazas advocated the conversion of nonbelievers through martial force when deemed necessary. Conversely, the Traditionalists championed the doctrine that individuals should possess the freedom to choose their deities without coercive influence.

Despite the more militant disposition of one sect, both factions generally adhered to Athena's fundamental tenets. During the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), the Holy Quinary comprised forces drawn from both denominations. In the crusade's aftermath, Helmstar, and subsequently Rumakarrûs, emerged as hubs of evangelism under Gudyazas' leadership. Concurrently, Malacost was established upon Traditionalist principles.

In the current age, the militaristic factions of Athena preserve their command centers within the confines of the Divine Empire.
