Athena rose to prominence during the Creation War. Though once merely an angel, she was exceptionally powerful. Athena formed an elite cadre known as the Golden Seven. A master of two-handed blades, she was feared by primordials and demons alike. Athena's martial skills earned her great respect, but it was her leadership and charisma that made her both feared by enemies and admired by allies. In both the Creation War and Demon Spawn War, she led smaller forces to victory against numerically superior opponents. During the Demon Spawn War, Athena was passed over when Ares became supreme commander of the Quara'tun Covenant. She did not resent this, as she preferred to lead troops directly on the front lines rather than a distant command role. Athena was again overlooked when Ares ascended to godhood, with his protégé Asmodeus taking the title of supreme commander. This time, Athena met her match in Asmodeus ' charisma and cunning. Years later, she realized he had manipulated her with professions of love, care, and deception - securing his position as leader of the divine forces against the demons. Following this, Athena focused more on nurturing mortals and taking steps towards becoming a god herself.
In the year 158 of the God Era, the esteemed Phalgas, alongside the renowned Athena and Danzar-Khâl, defeated the fearsome Nine-Tongued Worm.
On 17 Bliss 207 GE, Athena became a Higher Power.
Beyond her personal attributes, Athena proposed a system of guidelines governing the conduct of wars against the primordials and later the demons. Benevolent and magnanimous, these became known as the Nawirrûs Edicts. In 255 GE, it was these statutes that resulted in the sentencing of Asmodeus and his lieutenants, rendering them Fallen Angels.
Athena is the deity of law, virtue, safeguarding, and warfare. She is implored by the righteous, combative inhabitants of the realm. Akin to Ares, she is a War Deity, but where Ares would embrace razing and setting a city ablaze, Athena would prefer her adherents exercise forgiveness and empathy for the vanquished.
Athena, like most deities, has a multitude of sects that interpret her divine tenets in divergent ways. In the Lands of Purity, two major sects of Athena worshipers exist. The adherents of Malacost generally espouse more forgiving and charitable views of Athena, while those of the Divine Empire adopt a more militaristic stance and employ a greater degree of force in propagating her faith. Athena's precepts, known as The Virtues, include her Third Virtue: "All must make sacrifices for the greater good."
