In the 18th century, the mongrelfolk of Ânul were enlisted as mercenaries. Their employer was Griddrir, a city-state seeking to cripple or eliminate Okrungknot. This precipitated a ruthless campaign to purge the region of gnolls and any other elements supporting Okrungknot. The mongrelfolk of Ânul, long subjugated by gnoll slave-taking, had grown considerably since their initial taste of freedom. They now outnumbered the gnolls by a ratio of ten-to-one.
On the seventeenth of Brightstar in the year 1722, the hills of Ânul were formally proclaimed free of gnolls. Four centuries of gnollish dominance, focused on Okrungknot, had finally reached their conclusion. The gnolls retreated into the highlands of Damreth and further southward. Okrungknot was abandoned to the wilderness, with the victors discouraging any attempts at resettlement.
The Mongrelfolk observe the Second Freedom celebration annually on the 17th of Brightstar.
