Centuries of mining by the Varelay, particularly into the dormant peaks of Malephar, culminated in the event now known as the Varelay Upheaval. This turbulent period, spanning just over two centuries, was marked by intense volcanic eruptions, seismic tremors, and the eventual collapse of a two-thousand-year-old empire.

The cataclysmic eruptions commenced in 2608 LE. These events triggered a massive collapse, obstructing a lava artery known as Surtur's Eyebrow. Pressure, or some suggest the machinations of Surtur, led to the eruptions of Arhi'phis and Verfaer. This catastrophic occurrence altered the water table of the Gurutharni Swamp, forming Lake Styming and submerging a portion of Rolipoon. Earthquakes toppled some of the ancient fortifications of Mughakh-Gol, and lava flows scorched the lands surrounding the cities of Orias Vual and Dema'sax.
