The Crown of Phlehorn was crafted for the inaugural monarch of Phlehorn. In the Year 94, this inaugural sovereign was slain during a hunting foray, their body and the crown vanishing to a pack of winter wolves. Two years later, the crown was recovered, pitted and dented, from the stomach of a juvenile black dragon. Reforged, it was imbued with enchantments to enhance the protection and leadership abilities of its wearer.
Over the subsequent millennium, the crown was embellished, and on account of Phlehorn's prominence as a wellspring of divine energy, on 1 Artifice 834, it was covertly consecrated by Danzar-Khâl, transforming the Crown of Phlehorn into a minor artifact.
In the 1450s, a group of adventurers known as the Black Banner discovered the Crown of Phlehorn in a forgotten dungeon. From 1479 to 1482, the Black Tide leader Katrana waged war on the city-state of Maharâg. During the siege and in its aftermath, Turkûn captives were compelled to don the corrupted version of the Crown of Phlehorn, tainted by the Elder Orb of Embers. Over a three-year period, two legions of these unfortunate individuals were transformed into dark dwarves, wicked to the core yet staunch loyalists of Katrana's cause.
