Built during the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), Maharâg was a Covenant armaments factory. It extends from the exterior of the Gûn Volcano, where it overlooks the Galathien Sea, down dry lava tubes to passages and chambers to lava canals feeding numerous forge areas. The lower living quarters of the city overlook the subterranean Ebonmurk sea.
In 570 HE, after being cleared of its monstrous infestation, settlers hailing from Guthnimor took up residence, restoring and reactivating Maharâg's legendary forges. A sprawling settlement, situated between two oceans - one on the surface and another in the region of Onvorn - and in close proximity to a significant subterranean trade route, Gûn emerged as a crucial commercial waystation.
In the year 1479, the city of Maharâg was besieged by Katrana, the lich general of the Black Tide. Two years later, in 1482, Maharâg was captured by a force that had once defended the city, comprising both living and undead individuals. The living were compelled to don the Crown of Phlehorn, a cursed artifact that transformed dwarves into duergar and fanatical followers of Katrana's cause.
In the year 1533, during an epic quest, the Golden Elite reversed Katrana's magic, restoring Maharâg's "corrupted clan" to their former state.
The principal thoroughfare leading from the city is the Maharâg Ascent. It extends into the Underdark, terminating at the Great Tradeway.
The Maharâg people preserve strong connections with their kindred at the city of Guthnimor.
