Katrana's given name is Kat-Trâra Hlothuru. She commenced her career as a member of the adventuring troupe known as Black Banner.

She crafted an array of magical items (refer to Deadspawn ) for her party, with the most formidable forged from souls bestowed upon her by a mighty sentient weapon called Sarquiness. With each soul she harvested from this weapon and utilized in her enchanting, she accelerated down the path of darkness.

In 1464, she and the other members of this group raised an army of undead and mercenaries and embarked on a crusade to spread the faith of Thasmudyan. The armies of this crusade evolved into the Black Tide of Thasmudyan. She maintained a close alliance with Dax Jagg, both as adventurers and later as allies of the Black Tide. Despite Dax becoming a more powerful disciple of Thasmudyan, Katrana excelled at propagating the gospel of Thasmudyan. While Dax prioritized rapidly increasing his own power and allowing others to proselytize, Katrana dedicated herself to the direct dissemination of the Thasmudyan faith.

On 2 Bliss 1464, Katrana journeyed to the gloomy shores of Gathrot, entered the Basilica of Thasmudyan, and drank from the Cauldron of Lost Souls . She perished and arose as a lich. For her services to Thasmudyan, and now being closer to him as an undead, he revealed the location of six magically concealed Night Vats. Katrana led a platoon of skeletons to the ruins of Mulun'nâth and cleared the jungle vegetation from these ancient relics. The Night Vats, Molakh-Búle's inventions, were extensively utilized in the Black Tide War ( 1465 - 1486 ) . They produced the more powerful undead for the Black Tide armies, a higher percentage of which were added to the ranks of Katrana's Mauhúrz-Dúrak.

In the year 1465, she was one of the pioneering founders of the initial administration of the Black Tide, an entity known as the First Dead Council.

During the Black Tide War and into the Athenian Crusade ( 1539 - 1551 ) , Katrana commanded the formidable Mauhúrz-Dúrak army. The most potent element of Katrana's undead force was the fearsome Pitch Bone Legion. The bones of this vanquished army were exhumed from the fields and hills where the Battle of Mynzuth was waged, then transported to Necrocrypt and placed in her Night Vats, raising one of the most dreaded undead legions in history.

In the year 1476, Katrana diverted her forces across the Galathien, launching an assault upon the Sylvan Kingdoms.

On 14 Witchrite 1477, her Black Tide army captured Elamir, and a year later, the city-state of Voruner. In the Black Tide War, Katrana came to govern a substantial expanse of the lands south of Galathien. She was directly responsible for the desolation of the Sylvan Kingdoms and the utilization of the Elder Orb of Embers in the transformation of Maharâg people into dark dwarves.

In 1503, she married the hell knight Raxcvillibus Dumu-loc. Subsequently, she was known as a Dumu-loc instead of her given family name Hlothuru. Later that same year, while serving as one of the First Dead Councilors of the Black Tide, she vanquished the storm titan Dranfulmus and the great silver dragon Tindarâpha at Viressur.

In 1533, Katrana was compelled to depart the Sylvan Kingdoms by the Golden Elite. She retreated to Gathrot and founded a novel stronghold at the venerable city Phanêthil.

In the year 1556, she established Ilfengrim - a mage guild devoted to the creation of undead and the progression of necromantic practices.

In 1711, the Last Saints of Gûn attacked her in the Black Tide capital Phanêthil. Utilizing magic, they stealthily infiltrated The Ossicles, executing an assassination plan they had been orchestrating for five years. They breached the extensive wards guarding the palace against teleportation and opened a teleportation circle leading back to the holy citadel known as the One Hammer of Light. Knights, priests, undead-slaying masters, and seasoned soldiers stormed the area, fortifying defenses against the undead forces moving to protect their lich master. Her initial instinct was to flee, but the region had been locked down by psionicists, preventing all forms of teleportation, phasing, etherealness, and astral travel. She was forced to engage the soldiers of the One Hammer of Light and the Last Saints of Gûn. These saints were three holy figures she had murdered years after the capture of Maharâg ; they were later resurrected and dedicated themselves to destroying undead and toppling the Black Tide. Katrana was trapped, lacking the military forces to hold out until her undead hordes could reach the palace. She was ultimately killed by weapons coated in a liquid known as the Sweat of Danzar-Khâl, a holy water that prevented her from locating her phylactery for 99 years. During this time, her unholy essence drifted about, brooding with rage and still able to communicate with her undead minions, though her commands were often disregarded in the absence of enforcement.

In 1810, 99 years had elapsed since her physical form was slain. Katrana located her phylactery and proceeded to reconstruct her original body. Upon its completion, she turned against those who had failed to heed her commands, terminating them all. One such individual was the Dead Councilor Dax Jagg, who had ceased to pay her any attention while she drifted about like a ghost. Though not under Katrana's command, he had previously shown her some consideration. Four months after the destruction of her physical body, she was removed from the Second Dead Council. Katrana suspects that Dax may have assisted in the attack against her. Now stripped of power in the Black Tide and likely facing termination, she departed Necrocrypt and journeyed south to the minotaur lands, once again aligning herself with her husband, Emperor Raxcvillibus Dumu-loc.

Katrana, a lich of four centuries, possesses a captivating appearance despite her undead state. Her skin is neither desiccated nor withered like that of most liches. Her eyes, nails, hair, and ethereal visage clearly denote her non-living nature. Her eyes are white with black pupils, and her jet-black hair, which does not behave in a typical manner, resembles long strands of blackened iron - a deadly weapon when she binds them together like the head of a morning star. Katrana's skin is perpetually colder than her surroundings, giving rise to the impression of water vapor emanating from her body. Even in the vast palace chamber of Ba'lith's capital, her presence gradually lowers the room's temperature by several degrees after an hour.
