In 1475, the Black Tide deployed their armies to the head of Khilag-Tarkin, escalating the Black Tide War into the Lands of Purity. Along a rugged valley and into the Marrow Fields, the Breached Pass Campaign witnessed a series of battles between the forces of good and evil.
The nearly one hundred thousand troops in defensive positions fought relentlessly against the multitude of undead legions. Units succumbed and rose again as new soldiers of the Black Tide emerged. According to battle accounts, the nights proved even more dreadful than the days, with ghouls feasting on the injured and phantoms lurking in the deepest dugouts. As time wore on, the undead legions of the Black Tide steadily expanded in number, gradually diminishing the forces of the Farinteen Alliance.
They do not require sleep, are unaffected by the elements, have no need for extensive supply chains, consume little sustenance, and are unencumbered by the need for hydration. They harbor no yearning for a superior existence, and an undead army poses a formidable adversary.
Onkar, "a letter from the front"
In the final day of the initial month of strife, the battlefields of the Marrow Fields and Khilag-Tarkin were enveloped in a crimson radiance. A hallowed benediction, the Parry of Ares , fortified the spirits of the faithful. The soil, too, adopted a deep scarlet hue, persisting for centuries following this confrontation.
In the waning days of the Warper conflict, the Black Tide marshaled their formidable forces for one final, decisive push. Commanding the right wing of the attackers was Pinth Blackstrike and his Bloodbeard mercenary army. The left wing was led by Katrana, aboard a towering, spider-like construct known as the Bone Walker of Desolation. At the center of this powerful army stood Raxs, wielding a ravenous sword.
One of the more intriguing special forces employed in this engagement were the Princes of Blood . This contingent comprised 13 samurai vampires of the Hlotho Zîn, each attired in elaborate eastern-style full plate and brandishing soul-damning armaments.
On the final night of the military engagement, the Marrow Fields were enveloped in the ominous glow of Deaths Kindle. This infrequent phenomenon, the Shade of Darkness, emboldened the undead legions of the Black Tide and amplified the potency of necromantic sorceries. With fractured frontlines and the undead swarming the supply routes, the Farinteen Alliance withdrew in an orderly fashion, though leaving 9,000 casualties on the battlefield.
