The Marrow Fields is a grassy expanse located northeast of Galathien. This area has long been a coveted objective for many over the course of history. The Marrow Fields serve as a gateway into the lowlands of the northern Lands of Purity. One of the earliest recorded designations for this plain was Andam-Kizâr, as noted by the Tungesti and documented by the dwarves and elves of the Sylvan Kingdoms. The name Marrow Fields arose during the Black Tide War, which spanned from 1465 to 1486.
The Marrow Fields is a serene, stream-traversed valley, encircled by undulating hills and cavern-pocked mountains. This region has historically proven vital for defending against incursions from the domain of Khilag-Tarkin. At the juncture of the plains and the valley lies the sacred citadel of Gadyan.
The Marrow Fields are a landscape littered with razed forts, rubble-strewn fortresses, grisly battle sites, and countless bones of the many creatures that perished here during the Breached Pass Campaign. In this prolonged and bloody conflict, the combatants of the region were initially viewed favorably. Ares, the God of War, bestowed a boon upon the area, granting all mortals enhanced combat skills and vitality. Consequently, the forces of good managed to hold back the advance of the Black Tide of Thasmudyan for six months. It was only through the sheer numbers of undead, many of whom were former defenders, that the Black Tide was ultimately able to breach the region.
This blessing that Ares bestowed upon this locale is referred to as the Parry of Ares. It is a permanent enchantment that encompasses the entirety of the Marrow Fields east of Trygrorm and stretches into the expanse of Khilag-Tarkin. Over the passage of time, this region has become a hallowed pilgrimage site for devoted worshippers of Ares. Scattered across the valley are an abundance of temples, shrines, and colossal statues of Ares, his sword raised skyward as if to ward off the radiant emanations of Khâls Forge.
The Marrow Fields contain areas of unholy ground. These regions are unhallowed and sometimes give rise to undead mounted on skeletal horses, known as the Dead Cavalry. They were once an elite unit of knights from the Lances of Merioss. Tragically, they were lured into attacking what appeared to be an unprotected flank of a force safeguarding Katrana, only to be wiped out. The captured knights were subsequently transformed into undead beings. Though the Dead Cavalry has been destroyed numerous times, it manages to reform itself within months or even a year. The undead then ride across the countryside, slaughtering any living creature they encounter.
