The Broken Anvil War was a conflict between rival dwarven clans hailing from the kingdom of Hjalmarbrodd and the Grimmarsveinn Syndicate. The war stemmed from a long-standing feud between the Anbuzdûn clan of Hjalmarbrodd and the Khazdu clan of Grimmarsveinn. In 812, the demise of King Bilân Taruzdandu II left a young prince to ascend the throne. Three years later, Dandulig Taruzdandu III came of age to wed. Suitors from the region's most powerful clans were summoned to Hjalmarbrodd's capital, Numakkhalgu. The Anbuzdûn and Khazdu had competed in this ritual for over a millennium, a rivalry believed to originate in the era of Khalas's small clannish states. By the First Epoch, they had perfected the game, wielding wit and charm to captivate the reigning monarch and secure their clan's claim to the Anvil Throne.
The war erupted when the daughter of Anbuzdûn's clan was assassinated. Given the notoriety and wealth of both families, their respective empires were drawn into the conflict. The Broken Anvil War raged for eight years and would have continued further had it not been for the battlefield demise of King Dandulig Taruzdandu III. With no successor to the throne, the clans convened, as per the ancient tradition of Malad-Mîn, to vote on candidates to fill the vacancy. The groups unanimously elected the nominees put forth by Anbuzdûn and Khazdu. The two clans also agreed that the new King and Queen should adopt the royal name Anbuzdûn-Khazdu, in order to heal the rivalries between them.
