State Black Tide of Thasmudyan

The undead legions of the Black Tide were a fearsome sight to behold and a formidable foe in combat. They were the mightiest of this age and potentially the greatest since the Demon Spawn War. Fighting the undead is unlike battling a mortal army, as they are immune to fear and other mental effects, impervious to poison, sleep spells, paralysis, stunning, and debilitating diseases that can cripple a garrison, as well as immune to death magic - an arcane art prohibited in the Lands of Purity. Being creatures of necromancy, they are unaffected by such magic, and are also resilient to physical bludgeoning and ability-draining attacks. Moreover, they possess exceptional senses, able to see in the darkest of conditions, and many are resistant to cold, electricity, and polymorph effects. These are merely the basic defenses of the undead, for some are far more formidable. When confronting an undead army, it is prudent to have an ample number of clerics and invokers primed with fireballs at the ready.

Tarag-Khilad, the esteemed chronicler of the 8th Owl Brigade, recounts the events of 1545

The military composition of the Black Tide of Thasmudyan remains obscure. Below is a list of major units that operated during the Black Tide War (1465 - 1486), the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), and the Artery War (1546 - 1554). During the Athenian Crusade and the Artery War, nearly all of these units were decimated.

Anâth Nâru

The Anâth Nâru was a military force of regimental size commanded by Raxcvillibus Dumu-loc. This highly disciplined unit featured specialized undead and non-undead cavalry units for reconnaissance and heavy charges, as well as a command staff of seasoned veterans known as the Lix Tetrax.

Ghul Armada

The Black Tide's formidable naval force is known as the Ghul Armada, commanded by Admiral Bloodtusk.

Kambar-Ghul

This army was formed in 1461. It was constructed and led by the adventurers of Black Banner. The Kambar-Ghul was initially composed of goblins recruited from Othrangad, Graagvrii from Ghar-Lakh, hill giants out of Bauru-Tûr, and mercenaries hailing from across Hells Womb.

The initial conflict for this army was the Grim Harvest Crusade (1462 - 1464). Regrettably, the majority of troops who fought during the first two years of this war would be resurrected as undead. The army's numbers swelled tenfold throughout the conflict, with new recruits who, sooner or later, drew their final breath and then rose again as undead. The two preeminent necromancers of those early years were Dax and Katrana. By 1463, they had trained a cadre of death priests and necromancers to carry out the lesser tasks of raising the undead.

In the Black Tide War, the Kambar-Ghul was commanded by Garn Othrannas. Following Garn's demise at Ebonstar, the Kambar-Ghul was momentarily led by Raxcvillibus Dumu-loc.

The army consisted of a substantial contingent of undead forces, as well as a mercenary unit comprising half the total strength. This mercenary force was primarily utilized for policing duties and engaging with the living population.

Enveloped by the hallowed precincts of the Holy Sanctum, this unit was annihilated during the tumultuous Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551).

Kazurâg-Gulan

Kazurâg-Gulan was an army led by Pinth Blackstrike. This military force was composed of two armies - one undead, comprising hundreds of ju-ju zombie archers, and the other predominantly consisting of Bloodbeard mercenaries.

Mauhúrz-Dúrak

The Mauhúrz-Dúrak was constructed by the lich Katrana. The most formidable military unit of this army was the Pitch Bone Legion. In 1477, Katrana's forces garnered acclaim for their conquest of Elamir.

In 1478, the Mauhúrz-Dúrak seized the city-state of Voruner. Following the capture of Voruner, the Pitch Bone Legion was dispatched across the sea to the Luran Campaign, where it joined the primary forces of the Black Tide for the duration of the conflict.

In the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), this formidable army was decisively vanquished by the Voldanwen and the courageous efforts of the Golden Elite.

Tharn-Mol

The Tharn-Mol army was commanded by Dax Jagg. During the Black Tide War, the most formidable troops of this unit were the Pyrmidian Ghouls from the Pyramid of Merioss. When the war concluded, the Tharn-Mol was headquartered at Vraga Moltus. In the Athenian Crusade, they were deployed once more. Formerly considered the elite of the Black Tide, this army was annihilated at the Severed Neck Battle. It was never reconstituted after this devastating defeat.
