The Grim Harvest Crusade was precipitated by a clash of ideologies - those who advocated the creation of undead for any purpose, the followers of Thasmudyan, and those opposed to it, the adherents of Hades. The army that confronted the forces of Hades was commanded by Black Banner. After mustering an army of undead, goblins, and mercenaries, they embarked on a crusade to purge Hells Womb of all Hades-aligned influence.
Paradomea financially supported the forces under the Black Banner. They did so because for numerous years, the Dead Guards had been issuing veiled threats against the lich lords of the Council of Nine; the types of fanatics from Hades that they are duty-bound to subdue.
The duty of a Dead Guard is to eradicate necromancy and eliminate it. Undead are our primary adversary. They must be retired, enabling the spirit to embark on its journey in the afterlife. If it can be safely accomplished, the soul's redemption should be sought.
excerpt from a Dead Guard training manual
