In the aftermath of the collapse of the Kal-Oni Empire (1016 - 1266), a ruined fortress-palace from that era was rebuilt in 1270 by a sect of Hades worshippers known as the Dead Guard. The dilapidated structure was transformed into a fortified church, securing a network of ancient underground crypts - the final resting place of the Kal-Oni nobility. This spiritual domain, where communing with the dead was commonplace, became a site of great significance for generating wealth and propagating the faith. Rumored to be one of the malevolent conduits that contributed to the downfall of the Kal-Oni Empire, the Dead Guard constructed an additional tomb enveloping the entire area. Renamed the Gravestone Gates, this city-sized ruin at the heart of Zayr served as a place of Hades worship, the barracks of the Dead Guard, and a source of revenue for those seeking to view, but not commune with, their ancestral spirits.

By 1400, Gravestone Gates had become a prominent church of Hades. Constructed with Styx Granite, which lent the structure an ominous, otherworldly ambiance, it housed and secured Zayr's ancient mausoleums and graveyards, home to nearly ten thousand interments.

In the Grim Harvest Crusade (1462 - 1464), Gravestone Gates succumbed to a goblin army under the command of Black Banner. Under their new management, soon to become the Black Tide of Thasmudyan, Gravestone Gates transformed into an undead-making factory, constructing dozens of skeletons, zombies, and mummies daily.
