In the Great Exodus, the majority of the refugees from the Cal-Thaoun Dynasty (350 - 1016) settled along the southern coasts of Hells Womb. The community of Zayr, named after a shield guardian construct that fought alongside Arcana during the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), was established near the confluence of the Hag River and the Sparkling Bay.
Over the subsequent two centuries, Zayr, boasting a deep sea harbor and a bay abundant with fish, served as the capital of the Kal-Oni Empire (1016 - 1266).
In the Kal-Oni War (1260 - 1266), Zayr endured a crippling blockade imposed by the Merchant League. For six grueling years, the city's harbor was cut off, beset by dark internal forces and clashes with breakaway states like Paradomea. The populace suffered tremendously, with many fleeing to the ascendant side.
Abandoned as part of the peace treaty that concluded the dominance of the Kal-Oni, Zayr transitioned into a sanctuary for pirates, ferocious creatures, malevolent entities, and the undead.
The Pyramid of Merioss served as Zayr's most formidable defense. It incinerated pirate raiders from the Buccaneer Archipelago, boiled the insides of sahuagin marauders out of RĂ¢ngilan, and on several occasions directed its scorching beams at Zayr's own populace.
In 1270, a Kal-Oni fortress-palace was reconstructed by a Hades sect known as the Dead Guard. Designated as Gravestone Gates, this fortified outpost served as the base from which the Dead Guard maintained a vigil over a city-sized ruin, ensuring the deceased remained undisturbed, eliminating the undead, and eradicating sources of malevolence.
Seized during the Grim Harvest Crusade (1462 - 1464), Zayr transformed into the marshaling ground for an expanding undead force under the command of the Dead Council, the rulers of the Black Tide of Thasmudyan.
In the Siege of the Eastern Capital (1553 - 1554), Zayr was conquered by the Foronir Alliance. Polluted for a century by malevolent and undead manufacturing facilities, Zayr's sacred ground was left in a state of devastation.
