Gravestone Gates was a mausoleum-like church, constructed like a citadel, amidst the ruins of Zayr. For a time, it served as the preeminent Church of Hades for all of Bal-Kriav. In 1464, the adventuring group Black Banner and their goblin army assailed the place. Four assaults were made, each time with goblins and undead using the dead and wounded as makeshift stairs. On the fifth assault, Glórestel, the pilot of a skyship, was pierced with an arrow of slaying while heading for a bombing run over the fortress. His demise caused the skyship to crash into a wall, creating a great breach. The assaulting troops, embittered by the prolonged siege, spared little.
The attackers reveled in the demise of the most vulnerable beings, mercilessly butchering Habligon's (High Priest of Hades) carrier pigeons and slaughtering the infirm and crippled without any remorse. The deceased were piled like stacks of firewood beneath the looming shadow of Rancor Summit. At the pinnacle of Deaths Kindle, Katrana and Dax invoked their necromantic arts, reanimating all of these lifeless forms as undead.
