In 337 LE, the earth titan Hades transitioned into the Temple of Ascension, ascending to a higher realm of existence. On the world of Bal-Kriav, one of Hades' most devout groups of adherents are the Caretakers of the Hall of Hades.

On the 30th of Witchrite, 411 LE, a group known as the Dead Guard split away from the Caretakers. They were tasked with proselytizing, propagating the faith of Hades throughout the lands of Bal-Kriav. To the astonishment of many, by the Third Epoch, they had disseminated the gospel of Hades to distant realms beyond the Belt of Geb.

In 1270, the Dead Guard built Gravestone Gates.

The duty of a Dead Guard is to uncover and eliminate necromancy. Undead creatures are our foremost adversary. They must be dispatched, enabling the spirit to continue its passage into the afterlife. If it can be safely accomplished, a redemption of the soul should be attempted.
