In 1255, the Cult of Worms lost control of the formidable Pitch Bone Legion. This powerful undead force then roamed the countryside, assaulting and decimating everything in its path. For a period of five years, it pillaged the lands up to the very gates of Zayr. The turmoil instigated by this rampaging army, loyal to nothing but the darkest of causes, created an opening for the merchant lords of Kal-Oni and their covert allies.

The Kal-Oni War commenced as a civil conflict between the imperial administration of Kal-Oni and opposing factions. Most dissenters were part of influential merchant houses with extensive mercenary armies. These merchant houses aspired to steer the empire toward a path of commerce. They sought to modify banking regulations and establish commercial agreements at the company level rather than requiring governmental approval. The autocratic government of Kal-Oni desired to enhance commerce but feared that further expansion would grant the already powerful merchant lords even greater sway within the administration. Concurrently, the Shadow Sect maintained a firm grip on the government and did not hesitate to enforce their will through ruthless and draconian means, causing many to align with the merchant lords.

In the year 1260, the city of Paradomea, the seat of the Syndic Party, seceded from the empire, initiating the Kal-Oni War. The conflict endured for six years, ultimately leaving the Kal-Oni capital of Zayr in a state of ruin.
