The Kal-Oni lineage were the successors who came to govern after the downfall of the Cal-Thaoun family. Thereafter, the lands and peoples subordinate to the Kal-Oni family were designated the Kal-Oni Empire. Fated to become a dynastic line, the Kal-Oni supplanted the seven-century dynasty that had ruled the Cal-Thaoun Dynasty.

Before ascending to the pinnacle of their empire, wielding control over the critical governmental and societal positions, the Kal-Oni were deeply immersed in land-based transportation and construction endeavors. Under the auspices of the Cal-Thaoun Dynasty, they commanded an extensive network of mines scattered throughout the Gulimbor region. They excelled at operating on the periphery of conflicts, profiteering, and even inciting circumstances that would drive up the costs of raw materials and transportation.

In their home city of Sourm-Gar, the Kal-Oni family flaunted their wealth, proudly displaying hundreds of minotaur slaves toiling away in their expansive gardens. This lavish estate served as a popular tourist attraction, with visitors charged fees to traverse the grand steps leading up to the family's imposing citadel. The minotaur slaves were primarily obtained from the First Khazarkar Empire, often purchased at discounted rates. It is rumored that the Kal-Oni maintained close ties with the Minâth-Nôrî, the Khazarkar Empire's privileged elite, employing various schemes and manipulations to further their own financial interests.

The Kal-Oni were said to have orchestrated the murder of Emperor Cal-Thaoun X, the last of the Cal-Thaoun rulers, and his entire family. This incident was rumored to have occurred halfway through the 2500-mile voyage from Sourm-Gar to the newly established Zayr relocation settlement. Once on these distant shores, and before the gates of Zayr, the refugees of a fallen empire had to swear fealty to the Kal-Oni Empire or venture into the wilds. The Kal-Oni family proclaimed that the empire would be founded on the principles of the old ways, with the most capable leading the people rather than bloodline. Considering that the Kal-Oni ruled in a dynastic manner for the subsequent two centuries, these words proved to be hollow.
