Some refer to this as an engineering marvel unseen since the God Era. In 1829, the Nordern Empire completed a deep channel between the Bog Sea and the Mephigax. This had been a century-long aspiration of the empire, to liberate their cities from the dreary, humid, swampy conditions of the Troll Bogs. Their population growth had suffered in this environment. Though a generally amiable people, neighboring empires offered to accommodate some of their citizens. Most elected to remain in one of Nordern's three ocean-traversing cities - Bathyl, Fathom Two, and Biomechallum - and help fulfill the dream, the endeavor of forging a passage into the open ocean.

The history of how these oceanic cities came to rest on Bal-Kriav begins with the opening of Tempestant's Springs. Some of Nordern's cities escaped a world ravaged by the Bombing of Geb. In 1692, they passed through the rift, finding themselves in less than favorable conditions. Surrounded by the swamp-fed waters of the Bog Sea, an inland sea, these deep ocean dwellers, accustomed to their time on Geb's Rain, yearned to traverse BelnĂȘth and reach the deeper, cleaner waters of the Mephigax. When questioned why she did not grant them a more suitable place to start anew, Tempestant is reported to have told her closest priests, 'there were others in the bargain.'
