In the Bombing of Geb, Bathyl was one of three cities that evaded Geb's Rain. Similar to the others, it emerged through the rifts of Tempestant's Springs, escaping Geb's Rain for the world of Bal-Kriav.
The dark coral of this Nordern city is cloaked in massive patches of squid scales, some reaching 30 feet in circumference. This city, like the other sea cities of Nordern, floats upon the water like a grand barge. The coral walls and towers of the city stand up to 80 feet thick in certain areas. The Eenkai refer to this place as their "Settlement City." It is heavily fortified, garrisoned, and constructed for the territorial expansion of Nordern. During their sea-locked tenure in the Bog Sea, the Norderns prepared for the day they would reach the open seas by dispatching emissaries and scouts into the vast expanse of Mephigax and the sea Nielalroch, assessing the sea empires that existed in each.
In 1829, the Norderns constructed the Mephigax-Bog Channel. This ephemeral waterway established a navigable route between the Bog Sea and Nielalroch. Prior to the channel's closure, the Norderns relocated two floating cities, Bathyl and Biomechallum, out into the open oceans.
The city is home to numerous sailing ships and submersibles, making it a veritable floating citadel with a powerful navy. The presence of this coastal metropolis has attracted substantial maritime trade from both land-based and aquatic sources. The city boasts an expansive inner harbor, spanning two miles in width, and houses some of Bal-Kriav's most remarkable naval facilities. Ship repairs and refurbishments are predominantly carried out in massive dry docks, operated not only by large mechanical devices but also with the aid of sea giants. Bathyl's prices for such services are naturally higher than average, ranging from 10-20%, which can be attributed to the need to import all of their wood. Nonetheless, merchants can procure exotic ships, submersibles, and goods within the city. The majority of Bathyl's products and food originate from the surrounding seas, and their jewelry is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship, rivaling that of the royal jewelers in the Khazarkar Empire.
When perilous storms menace the city, Bathyl submerges beneath the surface and plunges to unfathomable depths unimaginable to land-dwellers. In these profound regions, known as the bathyl zone (the deep-sea area between 600 and 6,000 feet (183 to 1,830 meters)), the city illuminates with a spectrum of hues, alluring fish and occasionally "unfriendlies". While submerged, an elastic membrane envelops the city, shielding its crown from all but the most formidable assaults. Any rents are swiftly repaired by membrane golems, a unique creation of Eenkai scientists and wizards. Bathyl's underside is protected by its garrison, thick coral walls, and schools of dolphins, whales, and other marine life.
