Founded by Izanargam settlers, Bazandaggûl was constructed along the Azdun Gap as a defense against raiders from the Tribe Steppes. Once agreements were reached with the local stone giants, the fort became a trading post primarily inhabited by Turkûn and Stone Giants. Despite being sacked and reduced to ruin on numerous occasions, its strategic location along a vital mountain pass, near numerous streams and the headwaters of a river, compelled people to repeatedly resettle the area. Significant investment in the region's security occurred with Bazandaggûl's capture in 1244 HE. Thereafter, the fortress became a holding of the Glangveif Monarchy (314 HE - 31), and its defenses were significantly enhanced.
In the Second Epoch, the need to contend with the Orchish Empire compelled alliances with the region's stone giants and goliath. Forging this alliance and subsequent cohabitation required substantial time, culminating in a federalist government established in 1511. The secluded location and natural defensive features of Bazandaggûl have persistently deterred the Orchish Empire from overwhelming this moderately-sized city-state.
Bazandaggûl is situated upon vast silver mines. Many of the ancient and exhausted mines are often infiltrated by entities from the Underdark, necessitating keeps and fortifications that encircle the city's Underdark tunnels and chambers.
The most troublesome adversaries of the Bazandaggûls are the Umahanbad, the frost giant raiders from Tholamid, and a small number of other insignificant giant strongholds in and around Nym-Zoedine. During periods of tranquility, the city's merchants peddle their goods to the Orchish Empire, Garormuk, and even representatives acting on behalf of Umahanbad.
The grandest temples of Bazandaggûl are consecrated to Ares, Naraz-Nâru, and Geb. The city's colossal denizens typically venerate Ares, the Turkûn revere Naraz-Nâru, and the stone giants honor Geb.
