Valefor was constructed by the Dasath hobgoblin tribe. They built this fortified bastion within the dormant volcano Garâtha.
During the Horgon Era, Valefor cultivated some of the foremost conjurers of the epoch. Regrettably, much of their erudition came at the steep price of their souls, as they were often duped into bartering them away for demon monikers and other Abyssal esoterica. Certain of the mightiest sorcerers, such as a hobgoblin demonologist named Thararthel, commanded retinues of demons that did their bidding. Thararthel was renowned to have three succubus who served him as concubines and advisors.
In 1340 HE, the hobgoblins of Trudnar encountered the Zeymah'kein. This encounter rapidly escalated into conflict when the hobgoblins learned that the Kriistvrii were intent on establishing mines in the area. The Kriistvrii envoy claimed that the slopes were rich in exposed gold, and that they were staking a claim to it. For two years, the Valefor and Zeymah'kein waged battle along the rugged trails and slopes of Garâtha and Trudnar. Ultimately, the Imrithil succeeded in securing the road leading up Garâtha and into the crater where the Valefor were based.
The smoke billowed from the spires of Valefor, signaling the crafty hobgoblins' efforts to conceal the keep from the impending attack by the Silon Viing, the military unit of Imrithil. Even without the dragons, the 15,000 veteran soldiers of Imrithil would have overwhelmed the fortress, but the demons emerged, pouring out from the hobgoblin stronghold and tearing into our ranks. Monstrous, elephant-like entities from the foulest depths of the Abyss then joined the fray, stampeding both friend and foe. Their sheer numbers and ferocity forced us to beat a hasty retreat, with the dragons providing cover for the four-day withdrawal. Only three silver dragons from the once-formidable dozen, one of our most potent units, survived the demon onslaught.
No longer were we on the offensive; our sole recourse for survival was to dig in and construct fortifications to impede their ceaseless onslaught. We retreated across the Dargirth and into Hlothram. In this region, we commenced the erection of a defensive network to counter the horde tactics of these abyssal entities.
Ancilcil, the renowned War Historian of Imrithil, - "The Zeymah'kein Valefor War"
In 1355 HE, Valefor's demonic horde turned against them. This occurred after a coordinated assault by babaus on the conjurers. The demons assassinated a dozen of the leading conjurers, and as a result, the horde went on a rampage, slaughtering nearly everyone in the castle. Thararthel, the ruler of Valefor, shattered the rift between the Abyss and this realm. He then activated a powerful defensive spell that sucked any nearby demons back to whence they came. The remaining demons, he dispatched himself or drove off. Thararthel remained at the ruins and continued his studies until he passed away from old age. Upon his death, his demonic pact expired, leaving his soul energy to be taken. This created a problem, as he had entered into a pact with each of his succubus concubines. They fought fiercely, maddened by being deceived. Thararthel ultimately descended into the Abyss, beginning his new career as a lowly mane.
The Tarukkhâl road traverses directly through the ruins and into the subterranean regions of Drarthiel. Valefor is an unsettling and gloomy ruin. Runehounds, once domestic companions of Valefor, roam the area in packs. These creatures derive their sustenance from swarms of stirges that nest in Valefor's spires. The place is also haunted by ghosts, spectres, and shadows - these are the Lost Souls of Valefor, hobgoblins that endured horrific demises at the hands of demons.
