The Gypsum Rift was an inter-system rift that connected Chaos with the world of Bal-Kriav. This remarkable discovery was the culmination of three decades of meticulous study and research conducted at the esteemed Lamprophyre research facility.
Rilirthad constructed Lamprophyre because the vicinity experienced recurring Web Ruptures. Within the Lamp'ald cavern complex, these ruptures manifested for a few days or several weeks before vanishing, repaired by diligent weave spiders on the other side. The endeavors at Lamprophyre focused on discovering methods to prolong these ruptures and ultimately open one up.
On 11 War March 1244, scientists had contained a web rupture for three months. They concealed it from the weave spiders; creatures of the Web of Magic whose duty it is to repair such occurrences. The web rupture evolved into a rift. When it opened, it flooded Lamp'ald with gypsum. Half of the caverns around were filled with sand, obstructing long-used passages back to Rilirthad's nearest holding. Then unrestrained by gravity, the river of sand blasted upwards through the cavern ceiling and soared 700' to the surface. As the rift expanded, Lamprophyre was propelled upward, leaving the Underdark for the skies above. For the next two centuries, the rift continued to eject sand upwards. This surged through the city like a great sand river, then over the nearby cliffs into the sea. It had two major effects, one was the creation of the Gypsum Dunes, and the other was heightened hostilities between Rilirthad and its neighbors. Ivory Asylum was most alarmed by this. They perceived the rift as terraforming; one with the sole purpose of making the land more suitable to Rilirthad's Earthen.
In the year 1433, this rift was successfully sealed by the Portal Sentinels.
