Avernus is a realm within the Hells system. It has long been a site of great conflicts. During the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), it served as a Covenant forge world, guarding access along the Styx to other realms of the Hells system.
On the twenty-fifth of War March in the one hundred and fifty-second year of the God Era, Ares, the Supreme Commander of the Covenant, ascended, achieving the status of a Higher Power. His initial act was to divinely fortify Avernus. He imbued it with a War Focus, rendering the conflicts of Avernus more arduous and prolonged, with soldiers regenerating fully unless they were slain.
The current Overlord of Avernus is Tiamat.
