The Second Burn commenced when Mir'piamauza halted the flow of whale oil from Berrobess. A city within the Mir'piamauza Empire, it was the sole supplier of whale oil for all of Zeymah'kein's markets. Long considered an aphrodisiac for the Muneyd'vith, Mir'piamauza's military strategists had decided to utilize it as a weapon. For five decades preceding the Second Burn, they systematically addicted Zeymah'kein's Muneyd'vith to the substance; as one observer noted, "it softened them, rendering them more inclined toward love than war."

A month subsequent to the cessation of the whale oil supply, their dependent consumers initiated the Second Conflagration.

Mir'piamauza's command of the sea and rivers made this a challenging war for their landlocked adversaries. The majority of the battles between the two were among the spires of Kesk Lein and along the rivers Naas Horit and Bein Lom. Mir'piamauza took command of the rivers and sea lanes, maintaining their gains with a robust defense, and allowing the war to drain their foes economically. The war shifted in Zeymah'kein's favor when they created their own navy at Okaaz Spiir. The giants were enlisted with their sizeable fishing fleet, reclaiming what had been lost. They then moved their superior land forces towards Varrogrith. Realizing they might lose their western jewel, the Mir'piamauza sought peace. This Treaty of Berrobess concluded the Second Burn, opening the flow of whale oil to Zeymah'kein's markets.
