In 1340 HE, the hobgoblins encountered the Zeymah'kein. Regrettably, their relations soon deteriorated when the hobgoblins learned that their neighbors were intent on mining the dormant volcano Garâtha. Zeymah'kein's envoy claimed that gold was readily available on the slopes and that they were asserting their claim to it. This, coupled with other diplomatic missteps, led to conflict. For two years, the hobgoblins of Valefor, the Dasath, battled the invaders across treacherous trails and boulder-strewn slopes. In 1343 HE, Zeymah'kein's military, the formidable Imrithil, succeeded in securing the road leading up Garâtha and into the crater where Valefor was situated.
In the crater of Valefor rose the ominous spires of this formidable stronghold. Although this ancient bastion was well-constructed, it proved ill-equipped to withstand the relentless assault of Zeymah'kein's military forces. Valefor's garrison of 15,000 hobgoblins confronted an imposing army of 50,000 Kriistvrii, bolstered by the presence of dragons, war elephants, wyverns, and a multitude of other colossal creatures.
The smoke rose from the spires of Valefor, concealing the keep from the impending attack by the Silon Viing, the formidable military unit of Imrithil. Even without the dragons, the 15,000 veteran soldiers of Imrithil would have overwhelmed the stronghold, but the demons emerged. They poured out of the hobgoblin fortress, tearing into our ranks. Monstrous, elephant-like entities from the foulest reaches of the Abyss then joined the fray, trampling both friend and foe. Their sheer numbers and strength left us no choice but to execute a hasty retreat, with the dragons covering our four-day withdrawal. Regrettably, only three silver dragons of the once-mighty dozen, one of our most powerful units, survived the demon onslaught.
No longer were we on the offensive; instead, we were forced to dig in and construct fortifications to halt their unceasing onslaught. We retreated across the Dargirth and into Hlothram. In this region, we commenced the establishment of a defensive network to counter the horde tactics employed by these denizens of the Abyss.
