In the Year 66, Gimrune settlers journeyed to the island of Angvild. They had fled their distant homeland on Hezmort after civil unrest triggered by a half clockwork gnome named Burrorolath. Following his violent seizure of the Rha'khar republic in a coup, Burrorolath installed himself as dictator and then "encouraged" the populace to direct their inventions towards military purposes. The wealthier and more fortunate among the populace viewed Burrorolath's actions as an infringement on their freedom of expression to create as they wished. They purchased nearly every merchant ship in Furfar and then fled the lands under Burrorolath's tyrannical rule. This departure was carried out with some secrecy, yet the movement of 15,000 people to the ships did not go unnoticed. Several thousand were apprehended and sentenced to arduous labor, while others faced swift and often unjust trials that ended in their execution. The ships that successfully departed Furfar's harbors sailed northwest across Morwuld Briin. Records of the Furfar Exodus state that of the 15,102 individuals who fled Hezmort, 10,490 reached Angvild, with others settling in different areas, lost at sea, or captured by Burrorolath's police and soldiers.
Mechantus, the capital of Engineen, serves as the epicenter of invention and industry for all of Angvild. This bustling metropolis is characterized by a cacophony of activity and a hazy veil of smoke and steam emanating from its numerous factories and workshops. A labyrinth of railroads crisscrosses the city, while the skies above teem with the presence of balloons and airships. The populace of Mechantus is predominantly composed of Gimrune and Khazarkars, the latter having settled here as refugees during the Great Exodus ( 998 - 1017 ) . The city also boasts a diverse population, including Tragarans, Shou, and other races, who tend to reside in the quieter areas of Mechantus.
In the 17th century, the city commenced witnessing an influx of unsophisticated clockwork automatons. These entities, originally hailing from an area proximate to the Gear Monument, were captured and transported to the city by Gimrune explorers. The clockworks were analyzed, experimented upon, and then permitted to construct additional units of their kind. These clockworks have become a ubiquitous sight within the city. Their integration has bolstered the city's productivity and liberated more Gimrune to engage in tinkering.
