Urbal Nabad was founded by a group of Turkûn mining clans originating from Felak. To establish the area as a sustainable and secure living space, they negotiated a commerce agreement with the loosely-organized earth elementals of the Aerruxa elemental river, the Earth Seam. This long-term, binding agreement calculated tolls based on tonnage rather than the individual desires of the elementals. Before this deal, the Earth Seam was used for transit, but often at the cost of encountering earth elementals demanding tolls or outright attacking what they perceived as trespassing. After the agreement was reached, barges could travel up the elemental river to one of Aerruxa's great cave systems.

On the fourth day of Artifice in the year 380 LE, in the expansive cave known as Taraggûm, the mining clans constructed a port along the Earth Seam. In the surrounding caverns, stretching for miles in every direction, they diligently mined for gemstones and pockets of platinum. The river's earth elementals collaborated in this mining endeavor, with some even becoming citizens of the settlement of Urbal Nabad.

Above Urbal Nabad, after traversing numerous tunnels and elevators, lies the surface ruin of Ilagandam. This settlement was established by Urbal Nabad's colonists, but as it expanded, it gradually drifted apart from those inhabitants below. In time, the two communities became fervent commercial rivals.

Urbal Nabad's subterranean mining activities brought them into contact with the Glimmerkrim city-states. This led to raiding and the taking of slaves. The two sides never managed to coexist peacefully. During the Kilth Deeps War, fomorian and Derro mercenaries aligned with the Reds of Kilth. After defeating their foes, Urbal Nabad fell under the rule of a fomorian overlord named Nemeghast.

When Smizerak ascended to power, they dispatched their legions to reclaim this venerable dwarven stronghold. However, they proved incapable of maintaining control for more than a handful of months at a time. The prohibitively expensive endeavors to reconquer the settlement were eventually abandoned, allowing it to become the domain of fomorians, derro, and their expansive servile populace.
