In the Demon Spawn War, a demon lord named Sathumort invaded the world of Kriav. Opposing him was the Covenant commander of Kriav's military operations, the archangel Corellon. In a bold gambit, Sathumort sought to surprise and overwhelm the forces at a Covenant Holy Bastion named Liamenor. Sathumort, preferring to avoid direct confrontation, sent nearly all his forces through the Sathumort Pocket while he remained behind in his otherworldy hold Una'gah. Corellon's spies, including a demon traitor lured by riches, provided information on this planned attack. While Sathumort's forces besieged Liamenor, Corellon sent an elite unit, the Maeraddyth Brigade led by the crafty General Maeraddyth, to attack Una'gah and eliminate their leader. This occurred as the demon forces neared breaching the walls of the seemingly impregnable bastion of good. Sathumort's severed head was displayed atop Liamenor's battlements, causing confusion in the demon ranks, who then abandoned the siege and quarreled over leadership and the rumored plunder in Una'gah's vaults. Those who escaped Corellon's forces fled back through the Sathumort Pocket. On the Abyssal world of Nasudex, the Maeraddyth Brigade clashed with the pursuing demons, a battle that spanned five miles and lasted all day. Despite being outnumbered and facing more powerful individual demons, the brigade's celestials held their ground. Captured troops were transformed in the Orkran Valley, becoming the first of the Orc race, imbued with a hatred of elves that often eclipsed other enmities. General Maeraddyth himself suffered this fate, adopting the name Gruumsh thereafter.
The Maeraddyth Brigade was dissolved, its soldiers dispersed among various demon commanders. During the Demon Spawn War, they were deployed to diverse battlefronts, scattered across Quara'tun while serving the demons. When opportunity arose, they escaped; confronting their adversaries if the conditions proved advantageous. Selectively, they allied with Covenant forces, yet never those answering to Corellon.
At Liamenor, the gallant deeds of the Maeraddyth Brigade are commemorated with a memorial. In the city of Aphalur, a plaque eloquently conveys Corellon's profound sorrow over their tragic fate.
If I could have assisted General Maeraddyth and his troops, I certainly would have done so. Kriav was being assailed by a vast horde of demons, so to risk opening a rift and venturing into the Abyss was not a course of action I could responsibly undertake. They succeeded in slaying a demon lord, saving Liamenor, but paid a dreadful price. They became twisted and malevolent, harboring a hatred for elves that only the demons could have conceived. When he became an orc, my former friend Maeraddyth changed his name, becoming my arch-nemesis Gruumsh.
