The Burterinii clan rose to prominence in the First Epoch. Beginning as a humble tribe, they became one of the most powerful in the Gulimbor region. In 301, they founded the settlement of Ing-Serold, which later evolved into a prosperous city-state and the capital of the Kingdom of Burterinii. The Burterinii dominion expanded into Woad and along the northern coasts, enduring as the ruling dynasty for over two centuries. Since its inception, the nation has been known exclusively as the Kingdom of Burterinii.

In the First Epoch, the Burteriniis commanded substantial respect and power throughout the lands of Karterus. They wielded significant influence as power brokers in the region, extending their reach across all the Tragaran kingdoms and even into the affairs of the First Khazarkar Empire. The extensive spy network maintained by the Burterinii family within the First Khazarkar Empire became a blueprint for the clandestine operations of the Second Khazarkar Empire.

During the period from 575 to 590, the Burterinii family managed to install three daughters on the thrones of the Tragaran kingdoms of Karterus. These kingdoms comprised the Burterinii, the Cal-Thaoun Dynasty, and the Niratar Theocracy. Many of the nobility viewed this as a grand scheme to unify all the kingdoms under the Burterinii family's rule. However, it became apparent that the impetus was not the family's desire for conquest, but rather the ambition of one of the Queen Sisters, Sarquiness. She led her kingdom to war against her elder sister, Queen Sanglamore of the Niratar Theocracy. This conflict drew in their youngest sister, Queen Bleeberghast of the Burterinii, who sought to maintain the status quo and contain the war, but ultimately had to commit her own forces. This clash became known as the War of the Three Queens.

In the War of the Three Queens, a trio of extraordinarily powerful swords were forged. Each was crafted as an artifact of great power, created by a mighty titan said to serve Poseidon, and intended to capture the soul of a Burterinii Queen. When the three sisters perished in the war, each of these blades claimed a life and became a weapon that never seemed to remain long in any one's possession. This practice of creating items to seize the souls of the Burterinii bloodline is nothing novel. Family records indicate that the tradition began during their tribal origins in Woad, imparted to them by an exceptionally powerful Pixie versed in the shamanic arts.

The Burterinii still maintain substantial influence in the realm they established. Every few generations, they succeed in installing one of their own on the throne. The family is tightly knit and numbers in the thousands. Their surname holds great significance, and those who disgrace it are typically dealt with using brutal methods rooted in ancient tribal practices, often involving a slow, torturous death. The majority of this expansive family are devout worshippers of Poseidon. They have members embedded within various guilds and are renowned for their discreet services. It is rumored that the Burterinii become cognizant of developments before they reach the King's ear.
