By 980 LE, the Sathubas Region was home to three aboleth city-states. After a study emerged from Ophudehk, it was determined the region's prospective growth was constrained by limited water access. Ophudehk, the largest of the three aquatic city-states, was projected to reach its population limit in another five hundred years. As a long-lived and patient people, they began the work of re-channeling water downward from the region above. They were careful in the process, ensuring not to redirect too much water from Imgangreth, as those in this directly-overlying region depended on these water sources and would likely contest changes to their water tables. The aboleth did not want another adversary while elevating the water tables around them. Risk analysis revealed that interfering with the living conditions of those above could, at worst, result in a group redirecting a part of the Skera Hrolmir downward into their lands.
Nearing the conclusion of the Lith-Crillion Era, the great lake surrounding Ophudehk had transformed into a sea, and numerous caves and tunnels were now submerged. Observing the waters gradually rising, many of Sathubas's non-aboleth inhabitants hastily relocated to drier land. The holdouts, with the water lapping at the edge of their settlements, became easy prey for their aquatic adversaries. For nearly three centuries, the Grimlock city-state Akalgas endeavored to counteract the encroaching waters. Aided by earth elementals, they constructed a series of massive water wheels and canals known as the Akalgas Wheel. Originating from Akalgas, these ingenious mechanisms ascend thousands of feet, transporting substantial volumes of water from Sathubas to Imgangreth. The Akalgas Wheel is not the sole effort, as similar structures were erected across the Sathubas region, eventually halting the rising water table.
The Akalgas Wheel, with its countless canals and water wheels, some reaching an astounding diameter of one hundred feet, stands as a remarkable feat of engineering and construction that would undoubtedly awe even the esteemed citizens of Regulus.
The Akalgas Wheel is a vital resource not only for the people of Akalgas, but also for those who rely on trade with them. One such trading partner is the Orchish Empire city of Valangrim. This aboveground city collaborates closely with Akalgas, safeguarding and preserving the facility's extensive network of canals and wheels.
