Beneath the Eastern Shar lies a seemingly boundless labyrinth. Its most prominent inhabitants are the minotaurs. These ferocious minotaurs differ greatly from their refined counterparts in Ba'lith. Many have been mutated by exposure to deep rocks or have interbred with the demons that also reside within the expansive maze. The fiendish minotaurs rank among the most perilous denizens of this intricate network.
One creature who escaped this place recounted traversing a single tunnel for four days; "uniform passages, 8' tall and 8' wide...seemingly endless". Regrettably, his map and the majority of his escape records were lost in the Earthquake of Ogremoch.
This expansive labyrinth was commenced by earth elementals and numerous minotaurs under the direction of the archmage Nevicanad. It is rumored that the notion, and the lunacy of it, derived from the two decades he spent traversing the grand labyrinth beneath Lyktion.
The Apex Maze is the largest maze on Bal-Kriav. It is estimated that the maze covers twenty square miles and is still being expanded by rogue elementals, golems, and intelligent constructs, all continuing their last orders from Nevicanad. Some believe the sheer vastness of the maze, the Builder Curse, was influenced by Nevicanad's brief encounter with Thyrm's Blueprints. Although not part of the original design, the Apex Maze does possess unexpected exit points. These are the result of earthquakes or creatures from Ufthag that have breached the maze.
