Vla'akith is a title assumed by those who rise to govern the various Githyanki empires. Typically, during their coronation, they embrace the path of the lich. Vla'akith III, more commonly referred to as Lady Hunger, stands as the sole empress to deviate from this tradition, instead becoming a Vampire.
To date, only one male githyanki has held this esteemed title. The remainder have all been githyanki women. Some of these Vla'akith aspire to an even more exalted position, swaying the populace to revere them as if they were divine beings. A select few have attained the status of deities during these intervals of pseudo-theocratic rule, when the citizenry worships a mortal in the fervent hope of being elevated to the pantheon.
This pseudo-theocratic system is unique to the Githyanki culture, a means for the githyanki to elevate one of their own to the status of a deity. A Vla'akith, invariably a githyanki empress, strives to accumulate sufficient divine power from their worshiper base, aspiring to join the ranks of the Higher Powers as the representative of Githyanki mortal interests among their peers.

The first githyanki empire, the eldest in existence, was established the year following the Incarsabec Rebellion ( 1531 HE - 1544 HE ) . Its founder was Gith, the inaugural Vla'akith of the B'lailleth Empire.
