Amurlax is situated 5,300 feet beneath the surface city Vraga Moltus. The two locales are connected by a network of elevators and perilously steep tunnels.
This fortification was constructed over the former settlement that once existed in this location. It was built to prevent the recurrence of the events that transpired during the Black Tide War (1465 - 1486), when the drow sacked the town and then proceeded to assault Vraga Moltus from below. It was determined after the Siege of Vraga Moltus that the townspeople had become too friendly with Uzurundabud and never anticipated the troop buildup in the area to be a precursor to an attack on them. When the assault came, it caught the defenders off guard, unable to seal off the elevators and passages leading upwards to Vraga Moltus. As a result, Vraga Moltus was besieged from below by the drow, and from above by the undead armies of the Black Tide. In 1486, both settlements fell, along with the Farinteen Dynasty.
During the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), the Holy Quinary constructed a fortress over the ruins of the once-prosperous town of the same name. When the Malacost empire was established, Vraga Moltus declined to join, instead pledging allegiance to Ivory Asylum. Conversely, Amurlax voted to become a part of Malacost. Ivory Asylum maintains a cordial relationship with Malacost, helping to finance the upkeep of Amurlax as a formidable stronghold, effectively shielding their vulnerable flank.
Beyond Amurlax's formidable walls and intricate defenses lies the entrance to the Great Tradeway. Trade between Vraga Moltus and the Underdark civilizations of Igreshand frequently traverses through Amurlax, subject to the applicable tariffs.
