Before the southeast of Karterus was swept by the Gulimbor Cataclysm (996 - 1203), this area was Sorfandien, Elven for verdant valley. It served as the breadbasket for three powers: the elves of the Melephaeusa, the Tragarans of the Cal-Thaoun Dynasty, and the devout masses of the Niratar Theocracy. These three empires were situated on the edge of this valley, far from the dangers of the Fihrgrell Cap. The latter area, the highest elevation in the valley, is an unnatural glacier, a seal over a rift to an Abyssal world. The runoff from this glacier, over thousands of years, transformed the surrounding valley into a verdant basin streaked with hundreds of streams and ponds.
During the tumultuous period of the Domination Wars (995 - 1016), the unchecked use of magic culminated in a catastrophic magical event that ravaged the land. While such arcane storms are far less common now, temporary ruptures in the Web of Magic still spawn devastating maelstroms that sweep across the valley, leaving it scarred, fractured, and nearly devoid of life. This region has since become known as the Broken Lands.
From the west, the Broken Lands commence along the western slopes of the Kimaris mountains. During the Gulimbor Cataclysm, this region was one of the initial areas to be devastated. Even now, the place remains in a state of continuous geological and geothermal turmoil. Geysers persistently eject steaming water hundreds of feet skyward, gas vents belch plumes of toxic smoke, and Snores of Geb frequently rock the vicinity. The wasteland extends 450 miles eastward to the Nilkhimân river. From the south, it begins on the inner slopes of the Kimaris, and around the Fihrgrell Cap, then northward 400 miles to the Pharmûn Bay.
The Broken Lands are scattered with numerous ruins. The most dreaded of these is the demonic ruin Thegildreon.
