Built by the Varelay Empire, spanning from 684 LE to 2620 LE, this fortified structure guarded against the Vampire threat emanating from the peaks of Abrudax. While patrols scoured the surrounding areas, alchemists in the laboratories beneath Drachlaz toiled to blend the attributes of Vampires and Demons. One of the grim successes of these sinister experiments was the creation of the first Bloodbag Demon. Additionally, the Mathral Helas, Varley's specialized weapons division, was headquartered at this location, where they transformed captured prisoners into Vampiric weapons.

The demons would swoop in under the cloak of darkness, depositing blood-crazed vampires, now feral, amidst the unsuspecting populace of villages and towns. Mathral Helas was held culpable for these villainous deeds, a righteous punishment meted out by the Radiant Cross.

After the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE), the vampires redirected their operations westward. In the western regions of Ma'Ohari, the expanding territories of the dwarves became a desirable source of untainted sustenance for vampires who had long subsisted on the often tainted blood of demons.

In the First Merioss Crusade (911 HE - 920 HE), Drachlaz fell to the holy. The spoils of the dark place, treasures from the bygone era of Varelay, corrupted over centuries, thwarted all attempts at plunder. The victors were plagued with sightings, suffered frostbite, and driven restless from nightmares. Abandoning Drachlaz to the wild, the Smizerak Federation took up the task of securing the area. An elite unit of rangers and priests formed, keeping the dead at bay and interlopers out. The traditions of this unit continue today with the Night Vigil.

Since Varelay's downfall, Drachlaz has become a haven for the Undead. Among the most perilous are the Assassins of the Cross. Decades after the holy assassins of the Radiant Cross perished in Drachlaz, they discovered a renewed purpose, resurrected to battle anew under an ascendant Drachlaz Lord. When this master vampire was vanquished by the Night Vigil, the now masterless Assassins of the Cross reverted to their expertise in the art of killing.
