Gathargûl, or the Throat of Gathargûl, is a rugged vale bordered by the Peaks of Urkthal, capped on the northern end by a chilling coast and a milder coast approximately 150 miles to the south.

In 1304 DE, the valley became the home of four-thousand Tungesti. Having traversed a feywild fuse, a rift between realms, they departed Kriav for the world of Bal-Kriav. Alien to the wild and untamed vale, they hunted dire elk and primordial beasts. They named the valley, honoring a legendary mountain lion that pursued them for three decades.

On the Covenant's side in both the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE) and the Demon Spawn War, the valley functioned as a Tungesti nursery, cultivating young individuals destined for battle.

Gathargûl serves as the residence of the most ancient shrines dedicated to Ares. Constructed during the God Era, with the Tungesti potentially representing his earliest devotees, these martial sanctuaries are savage domains, strewn with the skeletal remains of those who have perished with honor in combat, as well as hundreds of tattered banners, pennants, and flags, and piles of fractured martial instruments.
