Herfarel was established by Kriavfahliil colonists departing from Lúthil.
By the early part of the First Epoch, Herfarel had blossomed into a prosperous city-state. The city sprawled across rugged hills, ravines, and brooks. The topographical layout of the area was such that illumination in one quarter could scarcely be perceived in another, owing to the hilly terrain. The city conducted trade with the halfling tribes of Armânuk and the more peaceable Graagvrii of Orondir. A testament to Lúthil's civilizing efforts, the Graagvrii tribes became more cultured and amiable during the early period of the First Epoch. The Khazarkars attribute this to their constant need for arms against the Bullywug tribes encroaching southward into their domain. When the Graagvrii tribes were wiped out, the bullywug began assailing their suppliers. The two adversaries waged war for over two decades. Despite Herfarel's victories, the bullywug's rapid reproductive capabilities meant greater losses for the elves.
In the year 608, the village of Herfarel was deserted. The displaced populace journeyed southward into the dense, verdant forests of Miradelgûn, congregating with Lambaril, the final substantial settlement of the Lúthil people.
The ruins of Herfarel are overgrown with vegetation and now largely reduced to rubble. However, the history of the place has not been lost, for scattered across Herfarel are numerous glyph stones that chronicle the daily life, events, and history of the Herfarel's elves. Some of the inscriptions state that the population endured frequent gnoll raids from Damreth and the looming threat posed by the hydras and Graagvrii of southern Orondir. Additionally, certain glyph stones hint at a past history of bullywug genocide against the Graagvrii.
The territories controlled by Herfarel extended as far south as the region of Karbêl.
