The Umgaril river is one of the few waterways that originates in the Underdark and emerges on the surface. It begins one tier beneath Imgangreth. Halfway through the Lith-Crillion Era, Sathubas, a region of Brucrumus's Tier 2, witnessed a rise in its water tables. The aboleth were responsible for this upheaval, seeking to upset the water balance and create more living space. At the time, Ophudehk was projected to reach its limit in another five hundred years. The long-lived aboleth, connected to the city, commenced the work of redirecting water from above. They were cautious in the process, ensuring not to divert too much into the lower depths. As the Lith-Crillion Era neared its conclusion, the great lake surrounding Ophudehk had transformed into a sea, and numerous caves and tunnels were now submerged. Observing the gradual rise of the waters, many residents opted to relocate. The holdouts, now situated closer to the water, became easy prey for the aboleth. The Grimlock city-state Akalgas dedicated substantial effort to counteract the encroaching waters. Aided by earth elementals, they constructed a series of impressive water wheels and canals known as the Akalgas Wheel. This marvel of engineering and construction would impress even the people of Regulus. The completion of this project took three centuries.
The slow-moving river meanders past the surface city of Valangrim after paralleling the Sidari-Nyx. Flowing southward beyond the city's boundaries, it empties into the Droonesh swamp. Barges from Valangrim utilize this waterway to transport trade between the surface and the Underdark.
