Mechanus. The very name conjures an image, meticulously drafted with a set square and protractor, of a system of Absolute Law. A more rational and organized domain would be difficult to find, yet unless one can grasp the underlying logic, the system may prove even more unfathomable than the chaotic maelstrom of Limbo.

The seamless fusion of the natural and artificial, the realms of this system comprise an endless array of gears and cogs, interconnected by a perpetually turning network of crankshafts, axles, and rotors. Where the machinery is properly lubricated, it operates with silky smoothness and near-silent efficiency, punctuated only by the soft groaning of metal against metal and the pungent aroma of mechanical grease - reminders that a traveler has entered a realm quite unlike the ordinary. And the scenery - even the most seasoned system-walker cannot help but draw a sharp, admiring breath upon first beholding the wonders of Mechanus.

Where the modrons are less attentive, nearer the boundaries of Mechanus (as much as any infinite domain can have boundaries), the relentless noise can be nearly unbearable. It is rumored that these regions of Mechanus are haunted by restless gear spirits or Mathematicians driven mad by the manifold paradoxes of this realm.

A traveler must remember that Mechanus is considerably more three-dimensional than many other realms. Gears and cogs can be oriented at any angle, though they are usually all horizontal or perpendicular to one another (the occasional cog may be found at other angles, but these typically have complex connection mechanisms to ensure the motion of the plane is transmitted). Unlike more "mortal-like" worlds, where most realms and burgs are found on the surface, there are burgs on Mechanus's worlds not only adjacent to one another but also stacked above and below, and at right angles. Some large cities can spill over several adjoining cogs, and the rotating bridges that engineers have constructed to cope with this are a sight to behold![1]

Following the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE), Danzar-Khâl placed Mechanus under the watchful eye of Primus and his Modron legions.
