In 899, one of Har'kish's Astral Skiff vessels stumbled upon one of the forgotten Eyes, ancient relics dating back to the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE). Shortly thereafter, a larger githyanki force arrived, laying claim to a drifting rock five miles in diameter within the Astral Sea.
On 16 Artifice 901, work commenced on Rib'git, a massive citadel constructed to house and safeguard the budding empire's specialized armament, the city-decimating Hand of Gith. The military significance of this structure and the surrounding rock, which had been rechristened the Eye of Gith, proved invaluable to what was then a minor empire comprising a mere ten thousand souls.
In 919, the scientists of Har'kish discovered how to activate the empire's Eye of Gith. This breakthrough allowed them to swiftly traverse the Astral Sea. It was another decade before the Eye of Gith was battle-ready. During this time, a Har'kish army was stationed at Rib'git and in surrounding forts and camps. When preparations were complete, they commenced their campaign. On some raids, the mere presence of the Eye of Gith floating above their targets was enough to extort submission, while others were met with direct military force. Fierce fighting against the Suellk, their greatest adversary, led to a tradition of grinding Suellk mind flayer bones and mixing them into the mortar used for Rib'git's walls, towers, paved streets, and buildings. The success of these raids and wars rapidly enriched Rib'git.
In the year 1003, Rib'git ascended to the status of capital city for the Har'kish Empire. By that time, situated upon the Ithar Plateau, it had transformed into an imposing structure, ornate in its appearance yet possessing a brutish quality with its sharp edges and jagged spires.
Nearly 5% of the city's population are those who have been programmed to serve, so-called Drones of Gith.
