In 1945 LE, at the heart of the great city Penumbra, an illithid empire was established. This occurred during a period of severe famine for the mind flayer city-states of Ráglauth. There were eight such states, and as they exhausted the lands around them, they turned on one another, raiding and warring for the control of sentient beings. This conflict, known as the Flayer Wars ( 1943 LE - 1968 LE ) , would ultimately bring ruin to all but one. The Suellk emerged victorious, founded in Penumbra's Synapses Square, a place where the brains of primordials still occasionally spark in their glass containers. The name Suellk was taken in honor of the Kye'suellk, an order of psychic warriors serving as the personal guard of Ilsensine.

In 135 HE, Suellk commenced the invasion of Ghífthauk. This world was home to the embattled races of the Githyanki and Githzerai, who were scattered, ruling from city-states, and constantly warring with one another, rendering them deeply vulnerable to an invasion. Suellk's motivation for the invasion stemmed from poor planning on their home world, as they had nearly exhausted their supply of slaves required to build and maintain their expansive empire, prompting their expedition to the mother world of their moon, Ghífthauk. The invasion force was massive, comprising nearly one hundred voidships, collectively known as the Revered Minds. This conflict between the people of Ghífthauk and the Suellk invaders became known as the First Suellk Invasion, lasting from 135 HE to 150 HE. The large-scale invasion, from a moon to its parent world, was only made possible through the utilization of elder brain prisons, the Silver Mirrors.

In 430 HE, prompted by the Psyche Intake department, the Suellk initiated the Second Suellk Invasion ( 430 HE - 537 HE ) . They waged war on the world Osâchar, engaging primarily with the Durkoth and their slave armies. In 537 HE, numerous Durkoth fled their homeworld via the Helas Vessels. The remaining population on Osâchar became the brain-stock and slaves of their new overlords.

Late in the Horgon Era, Suellk was beset by civil war as their githyanki and githzerai slaves rose up against them. When the Incarsabec Rebellion ( 1531 HE - 1544 HE ) concluded, the Githyanki and Githzerai had severely ravaged the Suellk Empire. Ghífthauk then became a world afflicted by psychic storms and virulent mind-devouring viruses.

The enduring enmity between the githyanki, githzerai, and illithids remains unabated. Two prominent examples are the githyanki empire of Har'kish and the githzerai realm of Roongutil, both perpetual adversaries of the Suellk.

In 1822, Suellk and the Arachnidion united their forces under the auspices of the Drachdekai Pact. Two years later, in 1824, the Fifth Suellk Invasion commenced, with Suellk and Arachnidion planetary invasion fleets assaulting remote outposts across the expanse of Brucrumus.
