The Silver Mirrors are teleportation devices invented by the Creation Creed, a department of the Suellk Empire. These mirrors were constructed to traverse the vast distances between the empire's holdings, which at the time encompassed the entirety of the moon Ráglauth. During the First Suellk Invasion ( 135 HE - 150 HE ) , the Suellk forces utilized these Silver Mirrors to provision their assault on the neighboring world of Ghífthauk.

Colossal living Primordials named Axinite host the inner sanctum where Silver Mirrors are fabricated. Beneath the mind flayer ruin of Penumbra, the Axinite Forge still pulses with the ancient being's lifeblood, where the tetrahedron-shaped Silver Mirrors that empowered the Suellk Empire's interdimensional invasions were forged.

Suellk's history is steeped in darkness and secrecy, surpassing even its predatory acts upon worlds and their subjugation. As the eight illithid city-states of Ráglauth began to exhaust their thrall, or "cattle," their cities fell into disrepair and their economies shrank. Faced with a bleak future where the civilization on the moon Ráglauth would come to an end, the city-states warred with one another for the dwindling population of cattle. Penumbra's far-thinkers, the Psi Intake, knew that even if they were to acquire all the humanoids from the other city-states, it would provide them with only three generations' worth of stock. This was due to a millennia of thrall in-breeding, which had drastically reduced their birth rates and health. One in four born lacked the mental facilities to survive on their own. The Creation Creed was tasked with finding a way off Ráglauth. Based on Psi Intake models, the world Ghífthauk in their night sky had a "75.4592%" probability of harboring a sizable humanoid population. Penumbra's leader, an illithid elder brain, informed the Creation Creed that traveling the great distance to Ghífthauk would require a substantial pool of psychic energy. They soon realized that they must capture an elder brain and use it to power a teleportation device, keeping the host alive and imprisoned to harness its latent psychic energy. While the Creation Creed worked on creating this device, the War Creed led Penumbra's soldiers to war. By the end of the Flayer Wars ( 1943 LE - 1968 LE ) , Penumbra had captured five elder brains.

An elder brain serves as the centerpiece and governing authority of the mind flayer community. The rule of an elder brain can take different forms depending on the locale - some wield despotic control, tyrannically overseeing the affairs of the illithids, while most function as consultants, advisors, and the vital repository of the community's technology, history, and psionic expertise. By imprisoning the elder brains of rival illithid settlements, the Suellk were effectively committing genocide against those populations.

A Silver Mirror is powered by the psychic energy of an imprisoned elder brain. The mirrors are fashioned from crystal taken from the former heart of Axinite. To use a Silver Mirror, a creature with psionic potential or psionics must briefly merge with the psionic consciousness of the elder brain. After expending their psionic resources, the traveler is then teleported to another Silver Mirror. The second method enables teleportation to a location plotted on a star map. The Silver Mirror is tuned into the destination by using sound, with notes corresponding to points on the star map. This latter approach requires exceptional musical skill, yet still poses perilous risks; if the notes are played incorrectly, one may find themselves teleported into the Void.

In the Incarsabec Rebellion (1531 HE - 1544 HE), the githyanki and githzerai, with the aid of the elder brain within the Silver Mirror, harnessed the device to flee to the Astral Sea.
