In the Creation War, Axinite was captured by the Nawirrûs Covenant. He was one of those undecided primordials, not fully committed to the complete restoration of everything to Chaos. Rather than eliminating him, Covenant forces entombed him in the moon Ráglauth.
In the God Era, illithid explorers detected potent psychic energy in the region where Axinite lay entombed. They established a camp in this area and dispatched slavers to acquire a workforce. This encampment evolved into the city of Penumbra. Beneath the city slumbers the still-living Axinite, which proved to be an extraordinary reservoir of psychic energy for the illithids. Its regenerative capabilities enabled a process of psychic leeching - the extraction of psychic energy from one being to replenish one's own. This allowed the illithids to study and hone their psionic abilities for extended durations, believed to be the foundation of their formidable mental prowess.
Later, Axinite was opened up, and a crystal forge was constructed within his chest cavity. One of the most remarkable items to emerge from this Axinite Forge are the Silver Mirrors. Functioning as teleportation devices, they granted the illithids the ability to depart Ráglauth for another nearby moon, as well as their parent world Ghífthauk.
Similar to how psychic energy was extracted from Axinite's body, which he welcomed, the illithids proceeded further, siphoning a portion of his vital energy to bring the Dromite race into existence. In so doing, Axinite embedded his own seeds of retribution within the Dromites. He imbued their minds with a hive-like mentality, rendering them impervious to psychic viruses and fortifying their psyche against the power of mental domination wielded by illithids.
For the Covenant, Axinite's most dreaded talent was foresight, as he possessed the capacity to envision potential futures.
