In the Dawn Era, a Lith-Crillion named Githyon served as an advisor to Ptah. Like his master, Githyon delved deeply into the study of psychic energy. His experiments led to the psionic methods known today as Energy Exchange. In a secret laboratory on Ghífthauk, using earth archons as subjects, Githyon created the first Githzerai by exchanging the archons' Earth Energy with life energy. The precise reason for their distinctive appearance remains a mystery, though some speculate that Ptah, a skilled sculptor, may have molded the malleable forms of the earth archons as their earth energy was supplanted by life energy.
In the Creation War, spanning from 1486 DE to 8777 DE, they fought alongside the Nawirrûs Covenant, battling the primordials. In the subsequent Demon Spawn War, from 89 GE to 269 GE, they served under the Quara'tun Covenant, combating the demon invasions and other disruptive elements deemed harmful to the Mortal Systems. After these conflicts, the Githzerai were left to establish their own civilization in the Asteraoth System. On the world of Ghífthauk, their greatest rivals were the Githyanki, another race created by Githyon. Constant warfare over their world's limited resources ensued, with their last great war lasting nearly a century, devastating their economies and weakening their armies. Capitalizing on this, the Suellk Empire from Ráglauth invaded Ghífthauk, enslaving both peoples, subjecting them to over fourteen centuries of servitude.
Like the Githyanki, for much of the Horgon Era the githzerai were enslaved, and potential brain-food of the Suellk Empire. In the Incarsabec Rebellion (1531 HE - 1544 HE), the githyanki and githzerai rose up as one in the Suellk capital city. This rebellion spread across Ghífthauk and to the planet's moons. During the conflict, tens of thousands of githyanki and githzerai managed to escape their masters through Silver Mirrors. These mirrors transported them to the Astral Sea where they gradually rebuilt their civilizations. Since that dark period, the githzerai have rekindled their ongoing conflicts with their two arch-enemies, the illithids and the githyanki.
In 1545 HE, githzerai refugees of the Incarsabec Rebellion discovered their way to the realm Bal-Kriav. Purportedly guided by their deity Ptah, they ventured into the tangled forests of Kuli-Cir, re-occupying ancient monasteries once utilized by Ptah and the Covenant during the Demon Spawn War. By the conclusion of the Horgon Era, the githzerai who had come to this region were dispersed across eight prominent monasteries, including Ara'rya and Osar'ged.
Beyond Bal-Kriav, in the Astral Sea, there exist several githzerai empires. One such empire is Roongutil. They are engaged in ongoing warfare with the githyanki of the Har'kish Empire ; these conflicts frequently spill over into Bal-Kriav.
