The Šukhan, or Šukhan Legion, is a storied military division of the Volgad kingdom. Comprising approximately 2,000 combatants, this unit was akin to a minor legion. The Šukhan Legion consisted of warrior mages, all of whom were skilled in the arcane arts. Some possessed the dual mastery of potent wizardry and elite martial prowess. The legion was commanded by seven generals known as the Šukhan Legates.
The unit commenced as a mercenary force. It proved to be a deadly and dreaded unit in the conflicts with the fire giants of Borngring. Volgad 's top leadership entreated them to join the premier unit of the military, the King's Army. The unit declined this honor on multiple occasions, yet continued to actively combat alongside the national army in the Borngring War. As the war between the fire giants and Volgads intensified, nationalist passion gripped the nation. A day following the Guldat Eruption (110 HE), the Šukhan joined the King's Army.
The Šukhan Legion gained renown for their steadfast decision to remain guarding Imrik while the city was evacuated of its people and valuables. When the fire giants breached the city, the legionnaires defended their post to the last soldier. An enormous force of 10,000 overwhelmed and slaughtered the 2,000-strong legion. Though the attackers suffered grievous casualties, losing half their number, the decimated fire giant army lacked the strength to pursue the Volgads into Cinyossion.
The legendary defense of Imrik and the tales of this military unit are sources of great pride for the Nithian populace. Throughout Tamlêrran, there are countless monuments and statues erected in tribute to the heroes of Šukhan.
When functioning as a mercenary force, the Šukhan Legion gained notoriety in the southeastern regions of Erthadan. In this Underdark area, the Šukhan aided the drow of Phaerssysn in vanquishing a rival city-state. As compensation for their services, the drow crafted a specialized overcoat for each of the Šukhan Legates. These items are known as the Overcoats of the Seven Legates. Regrettably, these artifacts were lost during the Siege of Imrik.
