Moltaria is a crystalline subterranean expanse situated beneath the bed of the Core Sea. This vast area covers half the size of the sea above it. The crystal comprising this region is exceptionally hard, rivaling the strength of quartz. Most regard it as laborious to extract, arduous to cut, and emitting dazzling flashes of light with each swing of the pick. While considered aesthetically displeasing by many due to its pale pink hue, the area's most valuable asset lies in its Moltarion Crystals.
Moltaria is predominantly solid in composition. It can only be traversed through the use of specialized magic or by those capable of moving through solid rock. Long considered an impediment to subterranean progress, some have managed to bore into the region with limited success. Those who have ventured deep report invariably encountering the domain of certain Earthen entities. Further advancement requires paying a substantial fee, securing an easement, or risking humiliation or expulsion by the area's custodians.
Moltaria has not always occupied the world of Bal-Kriav. During the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), the Covenant ally Geb transported this massive landmass to its current location. Even for a deity of Geb's caliber, this was a monumental undertaking. With the assistance of dozens of highly skilled practitioners of Rifts and arcane magic, a portion of the world known as Granitoid was shifted to Bal-Kriav, while the original mass was displaced in the opposite direction. This was all done to thwart the machinations of Juiblex, a demon lord intent on weakening the surrounding rock and undermining the sea above. Juiblex's ultimate goal was to drain the Core Sea, flooding the subterranean passages leading all the way to Pulax, the stomping grounds of his adversary, Zuggtmoy.
