The Core Sea was once the western, deeper portion of the Nermaris Sea. Following the drop in water levels during the Onyx Enmity War ( 915 - 920 ) , this region became known as the Core Sea.

From the northeast, the Core Sea is replenished by the melting glaciers of the Ice Cap. These converging streams form the Tulerran River, which flows into the Core Sea near the Pelwir Islands. From the south, three rivers - the Alarthand, the Famirótan, and the Elatir - empty into the Core Sea. In other directions, the Core Sea drains eastward into the Eämbavië delta, where the Avalninâth river originates, and northward, where the Eldorien river begins.

Many pirates conceal themselves among the southern fjords, islands, and river deltas of the sea. The greatest concentration of these lawless groups resides within the Pelwir Islands.

In the Third Epoch, the sea was a contested domain, with the Khazarkar Empire and the Orchish Empire vying for control. The Orchish Empire established their settlements, fortresses, and other holdings along the southwest coasts of the sea, while the Khazarkar Empire dominated the southeast, centered on the port city Aphalê, extending northward to the river city of Sakarumân.

The Kingdom of Ithengee represents another prominent coastal empire in the region. This elven nation traces its origins to the High Wood Country and commands the northwestern coasts, with its capital situated in Séregon.
